  13. SCIENTOLOGY'S LARGESSE IN RUSSIA

  17. <p>     Everyone seems to have a plan to assist the citizens of
  18. the former Soviet Union, and the Church of Scientology is no
  19. exception. For the past month, journalism students at the
  20. 237-year-old Moscow State University have been studying in the
  21. newly renovated L. Ron Hubbard Reading Room. Scientology
  22. propaganda in dozens of languages lines the walls, and video
  23. equipment is available. Pictures of Hubbard decorate the
  24. corridors, along with a bronze bust of "The Founder." Students,
  25. who have only the vaguest idea who Hubbard is, are impressed by
  26. the lavish appointments. But Western scholars in Moscow are
  27. outraged that the cult has gained such influence. With an
  28. outpost in an established university, Scientologists plan to
  29. launch a college of their own in Moscow this summer.
